Hans Heinrich (Showcase presentation)

16 September 2003 - 13 October 2003

Director Hans Heinrich was well-known for his esprit, his humor and his permanent good mood. He also made his films this way. Displaying professional craftsmanship, his films appear to have been made with ease even from a current perspective. Examples are "Der Kahn der fröhlichen Leute“ (1950), "Alter Kahn und junge Liebe“ (1957) featuring youthful Götz George or "Meine Frau macht Musik" (1958) with Lore Frisch and Günther Simon.
Heinrich, who was familiar with the technical aspects of filmmaking, had the opinion that technical things make up 80 percent of a film. To those who cannot handle these 80 percent, he said, artistry is of no advantage.
Despite his successes with audiences, Hans Heinrich increasingly encountered difficulties with the DEFA manangement. The director who had always been living in West Berlin turned his back on DEFA and the GDR by the end of the 1950s and predominantly worked for television up to the end of the 1970s.
After his 90th birthday, Hans Heinrich donated his estate to Filmmuseum Potsdam. Personal items as well as items from his film career were presented in a showcase. Shortly after the end of the exhibition, Hans Heinrich died at the age of 91 on 5 November 2003.
