2 October 2002 - 8 December 2002
Ulrich Illing, Technical Director of Studio Babelsberg’s Sound Department, presented exhibits on the history of sound film from his own collection and from the museum’s stock in cooperation with Filmmuseum Potsdam.
Visitors were supposed to experience the position that sound engineering takes in during the realisation of the intentions of filmmakers. It is this technical domain in particular that is wrongly dwarfed by film images.
From microphones to sound heads, devices from different epochs for sound recording, editing and playback were shown that delivered insight into the historical development of sound engineering. Phonographic sound systems, optical sound films, magnetic tapes and magneto-optical discs did not only illustrate different storage media but also the transition from analogue to digital technology.
Film posters, photographs and maps of the studio area in Babelsberg served as examples to demonstrate the close linkage between film, technological development, the studio area and contemporary history.
