Richard Groschopp – A Film Craftsman

7 September – 26 November 2006
foyer exhibition and retrospective on the occasion of his 100th birthday

Richard Groschopp (19 February 1906 – 8 July 1996) was not only a cameraman, director, screenwriter and writer for professional journals but also an author, a lecturer for directing studies, a passionate amateur filmmaker and the godfather of GDR amateur cinema. With his versatile and dedicated work, Groschopp left a lasting legacy: from the first German amateur film that won international awards ("Eine kleine Königstragödie", 1935) to rather simple, functional films that were made after 1945 and served to support the rebuilding of the newly destroyed country while, at the same time, capturing the country’s new start on film, to satirical, snappy DEFA films and the western "Chingachgook – Die große Schlange" (1967).
