Barbara Braumann – 25 Years of Costume Design for DEFA

7 March – 12 May 2008
With the extensive collection of costume designer Barbara Braumann, Filmmuseum Potsdam integrated a true treasure into its collections.
Besides sketches, figurines, and pattern cards with fabric samples, production stills that show actors with their costumes document the 25 years Barbara Braumann worked for the DEFA Feature Film Studios.
Between 1965 and 1990, Braumann created designs for more than 50 TV and feature films – among them realistic period pictures like “Berlin um die Ecke” (DIR: G. Klein, 1965) and “Die Legende von Paul und Paula” (DIR: H. Carow, 1973), science fiction films like “Eolomea” (DIR: H. Zschoche, 1971), and elaborate costume dramas like “Wer reißt denn gleich vor’m Teufel aus” (DIR: E. Schlegel, 1978), “Zille und ick” (DUR: W. W. Wallroth, 1982) or “Die Legende von Paul und Paula” (DIR: H. Carow, 1973).
In a foyer exhibition, the museum presented a comprehensive selection of drafts and sketches from the collection. In addition to these items, original costumes provided by Studio Babelsberg were exhibited – among them dresses from the film “Der kleine Herr Friedmann”, which was shown in the opening night of the exhibition.
